I
Introduction.
I
The thing we would most like you to do, is simply... 'Get Involved' in some capacity... rather than just stand on the sidelines and watch... this website is meant to be an 'Interactive Project'... so be a part of it.  It is as much your Society as anyone else's... so have your say!
I
We envisage a fairly long struggle to achieve our objectives... this is not going to happen overnight, so plenty of help will be required.  It will also take a lot of perseverance... so we hope that people will contribute and participate by coming back to the website again and again: [even if you are having problems with the Site... trouble downloading: no reply to an E-mail: etc. etc.]  This whole Project will be a struggle... so please... don't give up at the very first hurdle!
I
There are many ways to become involved or support us in this effort... what you choose to do [if anything] may well depend on what your individual Talents... Energy... Resources... and Free Time allows.
I
I
Objectives.
I
It is not possible to be too specific about our objectives because they will vary from country to country depending on circumstances... and what people in those countries actually want.  At the moment... these objectives are more like some general principals, as to... how things should be done... or decided upon in the future.  But, generally, we believe...

  • that people should be given a say.  Whether it's on the issue of Road Safety... or something like Road Pricing: [1.8 million people signed a petition to say they were against Road Pricing, but are simply ignored.]  And that it would be much better to get a general consensus before making any fundamental changes... rather than impose changes against the wishes of the majority.
  • it would be much better for Society if new technology could be used in ways which empower people... engaging them in pro-active ways... making them feel a part of that Society... rather than the State simply using it to monitor, control and punish people in more efficient ways.
  • to this end... we have outlined a Road Supervisor scheme which used new technology, [the Internet] which empowers people... which could significantly reduce the level of Road Accidents... which could target any problem on the Roads... and have people working with the Authorities.  [But if this is not a system the the majority would want... we believe that should be their prerogative.]
  • the longer term aim is to develop a Social Networking website, specifically for discussing innovative new Ideas concerning New Technology and the Road User.  Problems in general associated with driving and road usage... and solutions to common problems.

  • See Article: 'Who should support this type of System?' which outlines the reasons that people from different demographics might want to support such a system, whether they are driving enthusiasts, road safety campaigners, teen drivers or the elderly.
I
Become a better driver.
I
This whole Project is about raising driving standards.  The good news is, you don't have to wait for this scheme to be introduced... you can make a start right away... this very day... with yourself!  You may already be a very good driver, but the aim is still to become a better driver than you are at present.  Practice your Skills... increase your Knowledge... and develop the right Attitudes.
I
We are not all the great drivers that we like to think we are... there is almost always some room for improvement, so...
I
I
Practice your skills.
Be prepared to work on all aspects of your road craft... be ready to take a fresh look at your driving habits... try to become 'critically self aware' and make whatever changes are required.  If you cannot change yourself how can you expect others to change themselves?
I
Maybe consider taking an Advanced drivers course: [over the years many of us develop some very bad habits] or just purchase a book about advanced driving techniques... and teach yourself.
I
Commit yourself to becoming a good example to others... driving in a manner that is... 'Safe: Considerate: and Courteous' at all times.
I
I
Increase your Knowledge.
It may be many years since you passed a driving test... but do you still know all the rules of the road? all the road signs? and road markings?  Refresh your memory and be 100% sure you know what you're talking about... get a copy of your 'Highway Code'... they often change small things or add new rules and regulations... which might include things like... seatbelts for children, using mobile phones, etc.  You never know... you might just learn something.
I
Or get that book on advanced driving techniques... then simply read it and practice... read it and practice! read it and practice!!
I
I
Develop the right attitude.
Bare in mind the objective of a Road Supervisor would be to use their experience to help others become better drivers.  As an exercise try to get into the 'mind set' of a Road Supervisor... when out on the road consider which drivers you would Report... and what you would say in that Report.
I
The Report... would need to appear professional and objective... you would need to supply as much 'feedback' as possible... and not attempt to 'rebuke' a driver: [that might be done by a Review Panel, when and if it were necessary] or make derogatory remarks.  Remember, when out on the road... co-operation not confrontation... make life easier for others whenever possible... not more difficult.
I
If this system was introduced you would also need to carefully consider any reports you received... this system is about learning from others as well as teaching them... so consider, the next time someone blows their horn at you [or anything similar] what is it they are really trying to say? and is there any justification in it?  If getting abused on the roads is something that happens to you on a regular basis then you really do need to try and take an objective assessment of the way you are Interacting with other on the roads... ask other people for their honest opinion about your driving.
I
Road Supervisors would need to be patient and understanding... aware that we are not all great drivers... and we all make mistakes.  If a driver finds themselves in the wrong lane, give them the opportunity to get out of trouble... make a point of going out of your way to make life easier for others... even if you think a driver is deliberately pushing in, or changing lanes unnecessarily... still co-operate, let them in: [and if the scheme had been introduced] then you could report them if you thought it was justified.
I
Do not be 'dismissive' of other drivers... try not to think of them as if they were 'Idiots'... that Idiot might not be a very good driver but could be some eminent brain surgeon for all you know!!
I
I
Developing the Website.
I
The Website that we start with will be a 'bare bones' Site... a long way from what we hope to develop given the time and resources.  There will be many ways that supporters can help us build a Website which meets the needs of all our visitors.  The main purpose of the Website is to provide a forum in which people can express their opinions... submit their ideas... and make a contribution in whatever way they see fit.
I
In recent years the standard for Social Networking sites has been set very high by the likes of... MySpace, YouTube, FaceBook, etc.  It is no longer adequate to simply sign up for a free Chatroom or Forum.  To become a truly 'Interactive' site will require considerable finances and access to a range of technical skills.  It is our long term objective for this site to become an online interactive Project.  We want to try and build a network of online communities which people come to on a regular basis... become actively involved in... and are united in pursuit of a common purpose.  Just what can be achieved by using the Internet in this way remains to be seen.
I
We are engaging in a monumental task with a very worthwhile goal, and we will need all the help we can get... so we would like you to become involved!!
I
Under this section... are things we hope to build over time... and things you can contribute which would appear somewhere on the Website for a period of time... which others would be able to read.
I
I
Design.
There are an infinite number of designs for Websites... over a period we hope to get... ideas: suggestions: opinions: and feedback: from a lot of different sources.  We will look at different... layouts: styles: colours: graphics: etc. etc. until we have created something which we feel is just right for us... and then have it all put together by a professional Web designer.
I
I
Translations.
When we get to the point of translating the Website into other languages... it is something we expect to have to pay a professional translation service to do.  Anyone who did this would have to be completely fluent in English and the other language in question... and it would be a very big task... so it is not something we are expecting any volunteers for.  There are also certain technical difficulties involved... for instance, even if we could read and write a language like Japanese... there is no way we can type this on a standard English language keyboard.
I
One alternative is to allow someone in the country concerned to translate the site... creating their own version of the website and then run it independently... with just a link to our Home Page.  A sort of Franchise arrangement.  This way more people become actively involved... and they will be more in touch with the issues in their own country.
I
I
Easy Interaction and contact.
As we said earlier... the latest Social Networking websites have set a very high standard... we would like to make it as easy as possible for people to met others in an way they wish, be it... common interest, close proximity, similar demographic??? or whatever???  but, this will take quite a bit of technical expertise which we don't have access to at present.
I
I
Links.
If you have your own Website maybe you could create a link to us.  If your Website is relevant to Road Safety in some way then maybe we can create a link back to you.  We will certainly be looking to create a lot of links from our Site, of one kind or another... so even if you're only surfing the Web and see a Site you think might be good for us to link to, let us know about it and we'll check it out.
I
I
Statistics.
We will be starting with a few statistics and gathering more over time.  If you come across some interesting statistics which you think are relevant to the subject then e-mail them to us.
I
I
Content.
There are many things you could send us under the category of content.  These could be articles from the media on the subject of... Road Safety: new innovations: changes in Government policy: Road Safety initiatives being instigated by the Police and their results: [or public and press reaction] details of any training courses you might have been on: etc. etc. just send any material in by mail or E-mail and let us have a look.
I
I
Re-write sections.
If you enjoy writing then have a go at re-writing a part of the Website.  This could be just a paragraph... or a whole section which you think could be written... better: clearer: more concise: or even just different.  Submit it by e-mail and we might include it... or part of it... if only for the sake of change... as a way of keeping the Website fresh.  It's possible we might alter it a bit... but if we use it in any part then we will acknowledge your contribution at the bottom: [i.e. written by... Name: Town: Country.]  create a Link to your website? blog? if required.  Or if you are an expert in SEO [Search Engine Optimisation] re-write a section which targets a particular Keyword or Phrase.
I
I
Write.
We will also be looking for people to contribute things they have written in their entirety.  This could be a paragraph or section with your own ideas which you think should be included... e-mail it to us... let us know exactly where you think it should appear.  Include a Tag Line at the bottom if you would like a Link.  SEO it, if you know how.
I
I
Reviews.
If you have a bit more to say on the subject than just a few comments, you could write a Review.  Either about the Road Supervisors scheme... i.e. the concept of using the Internet to reduce road accidents... and/or, its Implementation: i.e. the concept of developing and promoting a Project over the Internet.  [These concepts are both very similar... in that they both seek to use modern technology as a way of empowering ordinary citizens... and to utilise their... skills: knowledge: energy: and experience.]
I
Give your Review a Title... an Introduction of 2 or 3 lines and then the Review itself... something between 200 and 1000 words.  We won't narrow it down more than that... the perspective you take on this subject is entirely up to you.  We will save them until we have collected a few, then we will create a Reviews page... a Title and Introduction... then a link to the Review... which we will invite visitors to read and to comment on.
I
I
News.
You could write an article about a Road Safety issue in your area... or write what you think about certain issues... which we might include in the News section if it is topical.  If we start our own Newsletter then we may be looking for contributions for that.
I
I
Opinions.
If you have definite opinions about any aspect of the Road Supervisors Network then fill in one of our Feedback Forms... or E-mail them to us direct.
I
I
Standard letters.
In time... we hope to create a 'File' with a collection of 'Standard letters'... and 'Action packs'... that could be downloaded.  If anyone wanted to write to a... Newspaper: Organisation: or Politician: they could look through the 'File'... pick out a letter... and just fill in the blank spaces... instead of having to create it themselves from scratch every time.  So, if you happen to write a good letter to someone... or you want to make up a standard letter specifically for the 'File'... send us a copy and we might be able to use it.  Also could send in any Legal Templates that work... for such things as... appealing against Speed Cameras or Parking Offences.
I
I
Supporting the Objectives
I
Under this section... are ways in which you could contribute but that would not really become a part of the Website... other than maybe some comments which would appear for a limited period.  One of our main objectives for the Website is to provide a range of Interactive elements where people can... express: exchange: and develop ideas.
I
I
The Concept.
The first thing we would like you to do is download a copy of the Concept and 'Read it'.  When you've read it have a 'think about it'... and then give us some 'Feedback'.  We want to know about your opinions and your ideas, [so that we can gradually refine every aspect of the Concept into a detailed Plan]... good or bad.
I
I
Objections.
We really do want to hear about any objection you have... any problems you foresee... or any adverse effects you think this might have.  This scheme will ultimately stand or fall on its own merits... it will have to withstand the fiercest criticism from 'Experts', this is to be expected... and it is only right that it should.  So, the sooner we address any potential problems the better... whether your objections are... Practical: Legal: or Philosophical... we want to hear them.  We will then either address the problem directly, giving an alternative view... change the Plan a bit to accommodate a valid point... or if it's a real tough one, we'll put it out on the Web and invite our visitors to help find a solution.
I
I
Feedback.
We would like to hear your opinion on every aspect of the Website... whether it be... the design: its functions: or any content... which you agree with or not.  What do you think are the most important aspects of Road Safety? what are the things which get you angry out on the roads?  With 'The Project'... do you think it has any chance of succeeding? how can it be improved? etc. etc.  Click Feedback and let us know.
I
I
Ideas.
On the same basis... we also want to hear your 'Ideas' on everything.  This might be ways to... improve the Plan: create a better Website: Spread the Word: get Publicity: or any ways to further the objectives of The Project.
I
I
Message Boards.
[Disconnected at present.] Not only will you be able to read our Message Board and leave messages but there are many, many other Message Boards around where you might be able to leave a message and get others to visit our Website.  Have a look in Search engines or Directories under things like... 'Road Safety: Car Accidents: Auto Accidents': etc. find different organisations which have an interest in this subject... go to their Message Board or Discussion Forum... mention this Project.  Avoid spamming but try and leave the URL so they can find us.
I
I
Chat Rooms.
[Also Disconnected at present.] Visit our Chat Room and express your opinions and exchange ideas.  And again... there are many other Chat Rooms where it might be possible to mention us and get others to visit our Website. [see above.]
I
I
E-mail.
You can sent an E-mail to one of our E-mail addresses.  Go to the E-mail section and it will explain which address to use if you want to contact us without others reading it.
I
I
FAQ's.
Read the FAQ's or ask us a question.  This has been compiled with only a very few people submitting questions.  In time... when we know the questions people really want answers to, we can add them to the list.  If you have a question click Feedback
I
I
The Project.
Or you might wish to support the objectives by getting involved with the more detailed aspects of the Implementation Strategy.
I
I
Form a Group.
This might be formed with people who live geographically close to each other... with the view to lobbying local Politicians.  It might be a group of like minded individuals who are separated by distance but find they work well together... or have a interest in a very specific aspect of road safety and happen to form a close relationship over the Net.
I
How people get together... and what they concentrate their efforts on... would be entirely up to the individuals concerned.
I
I
Politically Active.
If we are to be successful then we will need to get involved in the Political process at some stage.  Again, it is not possible for us to have contact with... every Politician: at every level: in every Country: the responsibility will, ultimately, fall to those who live in those Countries.  Whether this is taken up by... a large group of people: a few individuals: or people who are already Politicians: will probably vary from place to place, but, however it happens it will take time and effort from those involved.
I
I
Credibility...
is something we need to earn and establish over a period of time... both, between us and our supporters... and between our 'Network' and the wider community: i.e. other Networks: Organisations: Companies: Bodies: Governments: etc. which we might have contact with.
I
So, please remember... whenever you are dealing with other people under this programme, do so in a polite, professional manner... your behaviour will reflect on us all.  It takes a long time and a lot of effort to establish a good reputation and it takes very little to get a bad one.
I
I
Co-ordinating the effort...
is something we expect to be heavily involved in but there are still aspects of this anyone can help with.  This basically means that we try to keep the process moving forward by making sure that the same thing is not done over and over again by different individuals or groups.  For instance... a Politician does not want to reply to a hundred different letters from individuals all asking the same basic questions... we want to send one letter, from whatever source... let others know about it... and then move the process on.
I
I
Monitor progress.
In time... we would hope to make it easy for anyone to monitor progress... simply click on a 'List'... click on a 'Name'... access that 'File'... and read any correspondence.  If things seemed to have ground to a halt then we [or someone else] could pick up where others had left off.
I
I
Progress reports.
This would be looking more at the 'Big Picture'... just giving summaries of what was happening in different areas, or Countries... but would rely to a certain extent on information which had been supplied by others.
I
I
Lists.
In time... we hope to compile lists of... Politicians: Professional Bodies and Associations: Road Safety Organisations: Insurance Companies: etc. etc. and anyone else we think should be canvassed on this subject.  [These lists might be compiled by us or sent to us by others.]  So, anyone could look up the list... click on a name... and access the 'File' which would show any letters which had been... sent: when: by whom: and any replies: [provided we were informed in the first place.]  Another 'File' might include a list of 'Standard Letters'... one for every occasion... which could be downloaded and sent.
I
I
Grassroots Development.
I
This is also an integral part of The Project's Implementation Strategy... to 'Spread the Word' from the ground up... and so create a Grassroots Network.  This is one area that anyone could become involved in... just tell others about us, even if it is only one other person... and ask them to fill out one of our Feedback Forms.
I
I
Spreading the Word.
The following... mentions many different ways of making us known to others.  Just because we have mentioned something, it does not mean that we are expecting everyone to go out and try all these things.  We hope that the Internet can be used to a large extent... where information can be sent cheaply and quickly... and that those who support the objectives of the project will perpetuate the message by sending it to those they know... and asking them to send it on to others... slowly building a pyramid.
I
Have a look at the list below for ways you could help us spread the message.
I
I
[General Target.]
I
Non-specific... to anybody: i.e. Acquaintances: Friends: Family: Workmates: etc.
I
I
Word of Mouth.
Just talk about it to anyone you know... on any occasion... bring up the subject of... road safety: speed cameras: accidents: driver training: etc. etc. etc. tell them about our Concept... and ask them what they think about it.
I
I
E-mail...
your address book.  Send them a few details... ask them to... look up our Website: and then carry on the process, E-mail their address book.  Viral Marketing is an excellent way of spreading the word... cheaply and quickly... without putting a huge burden on anyone in particular.
I
I
Banners or Bumper Stickers.
Our name and URL stuck up in a public place... this is the kind of thing that anyone could see... it raises the profile... and may get others to log-on and have a look.  We do not have a supply of these... it's just something which might be done at sometime by someone.
I
I
Media.
An advertisement of any kind in a newspaper, magazine, newsletter, e-letter, etc. is something which can be seen by anyone... it helps to raise the profile... but unlike an article, is does not really make others form an opinion.
I
I
News Groups...
on the Internet.  You could try making our Website known by mentioning us on any Newsgroups you find... or know of... which are relevant to Road Safety issues.
I
I
Message Boards...
Forums, Social Networking sites.. you could try leaving messages if you come across any boards where this subject might be of interest to other users.
I
I
Chat Rooms.
Again... if it's relevant to the subject under discussion... and it doesn't upset anyone because they think you're spamming... give our Website a mention.
I
I
Search Engines.
We will register with the top search engines... but we are not expecting a lot of visitors to find us because they happened to log on and typed in 'Road Safety'... 'Road Accidents' or something similar under Search.  However... if you know all about SEO... and you can see that certain pages could be re-written to make them Search Engine friendly for particular Keywords or phrases... please drop us a line.
I
I
[Specific Target.]
I
Targeted at a specific audience: i.e. those who have some connection to Road Safety issues.
I
I
Insurance companies.
It is hard to say how they would react to such a scheme as this.  Would they think... it's a great way to reduce the number of claims... which means more profits? or would they think... less claims means lower premiums... smaller turnover means less profits? perhaps they could make a larger profit on a smaller turnover? maybe they would be very altruistic and put the good of Society first!?  Bottom line is... Insurance is becoming incredibly expensive... particularly for young drivers... many now taking a chance by driving without Insurance... and the only way that is going to change is if the level of Accidents is reduced.
I
I
Motoring Organisations
A favourable article in a magazine [especially one published by a motoring organisation and sent to its members] or newspaper in a motoring section... would be an excellent way to generate public awareness.  We would also want to canvas the opinion of those who run the Motoring Organisations: [those who do... breakdown service: car inspections: etc.]
I
I
Road Safety Organisations.
There are already quite a lot of Road Safety Organisations which would probably be very interested to hear about new developments.  They may support the Concept... they may not... but they would almost certainly form some Opinion... and we would like to hear it.  Many of these organisations could also be classified as being 'pro-car' or 'anti-car'... which seem to treat each other like 'Heretics' rather than people who are working for a common cause... and nearly all seem to be entrenched in their own mind-sets and totally against new ideas.  People you might expect to be supportive are more likely to react like you have just stood on their toes.
I
Road Safety Organisations may find that after embarking on some new initiative... getting a new Law passed... there is an initial period of success... then they hit a brick wall... with no more improvement taking place... they have reached their 'Plateau'... and things suddenly level off.  Once this happens a new approach is required in order to make any more progress... and this system would provide a built-in mechanism which would allow people to become pro-active in any aspect of Road Safety... to target different problems without having to start from scratch each time.
I
I
Professional Bodies.
Many professions have their own 'Associations' or 'Bodies'... which have some relevance to Accidents and Road Safety issues... and we would need to canvas their opinion, in time.  These might include members of the... Legal Professions: Medical Professions: Law Enforcement: Emergency Services: etc.
I
I
Government Departments.
Also many departments which are involved and would be affected in some way.  Their involvement might be associated with... Courts: Law Enforcement: Health Care: Education: Driving Standards: Vehicle Inspections: Taxation: Finance: etc. etc. etc.  It is possible that they will not express an opinion in public as this would be determined by Politicians... but they would undoubtedly have a significant input during the process... so their views would be of importance.
I
I
[Individual Target.]
I
An individual... someone you don't necessarily know first hand... but is in a position of power or influence.
I
I
Journalist.
Some are very influential... have their own columns, maybe appear on television, maybe specialise in motoring issues.  If this were to be successful we should expect journalists to give the scheme a very close inspection at some stage.
I
I
Senior Police Officers.
Their views would be very important in influencing the way that Politicians think.  They have many years experience in dealing with drivers and accidents and may form a very different perspective to ordinary members of the public.  The scheme would affect them directly in quite a few different ways... they may think these are positive ways... they might not... and very possibly there will be a whole range of different views... just as there will be with everyone and every group!!
I
I
Politician.
This is very much the end of the line... Politicians in one form or another.  Ultimately, these are the people who make the decisions... and their views will matter more than anyone else's.  So, before we get to this level we really need to make sure that we have done our homework... if we have failed to convince enough people, [or influential groups of people] of the validity of the case by this stage, then we will never convince the Politicians.
I
I
Finances.
I
We make no secret of the fact that raising funds is a vitally important part of this exercise.  If we are to be successful in this endeavour it is going to take... Time: Commitment: and Money.  Our ability to perform the role we have set out for ourselves is absolutely reliant on obtaining outside Financial assistance... without it there is no chance of success!
I
  • We are attempting to develop the concept in three Stages.  Stage 1 has been financed by ourselves.
  • Stage 3 is the point where we can be self-sustaining by introduce some kind of membership?? or generate some advertising revenue??
  • The beginning of Stage 2 is where we are right now... a lot of work to do... a much larger financial commitment required... and little or no income!
I
We do realise that there are many people who will not want to make any kind of Financial contribution... or are unable to... and that is fine... we do not want to discourage anyone from becoming involved in other ways because they feel under pressure to make a Donation.  We want to encourage everyone to participate and contribute in whatever way their... Time: Energy: Talents: and Resources allows.
I
I
Donate.
For those who have very limited Time... but Resources are not such a problem... and would still like to help... perhaps making a Financial contribution would be the easiest option?  So, if you would like to assist this Project... all Donation are gratefully accepted... please Click Here
I
I
Raise Funds.
From the outset we have not been actively trying to raise funds from others... but there is a definite limit to what we can achieve with our own resources.  In the mean time our only prospect for making progress is through some voluntary Donations.  The following categories we see as being a bit further down the track, when we have achieved a certain amount of progress... and gained a lot more support: [i.e. Stage 2 or early Stage 3 development.]
I
I
Sponsors.
Being a Sponsor for something is a big commitment... anyone contemplating this would want to be very sure about what they were getting tied up with.  To a certain degree they are putting their reputation at stake.
I
Getting a Sponsor will probably have to wait until we have established a much higher profile.
I
I
Advertisers.
For these it basically comes down to a commercial decision.  Do we attract the type of people they are looking for? how many people do we attract to our Site? and how much will it cost them?  For us it is about getting the right kind of Advertisers... or at least not attracting the wrong sort!
I
If we get beyond Stage 2... to the point of having Advertisers then you could always support us by making a point of coming via our Website when you want to buy something: [when we have the right Advertiser] so that we earn a small commission.  Recent figures for advertising revenues on websites are not that encouraging... unless you are getting millions of hits... or very well targeted hits for a niche market... so this may present limited opportunities.  [Some adverts for Affiliate Marketing programmes are now being shown.]
I
I
Supporters.
A commercial Supporter might be seen as somewhere between a Sponsor and an Advertiser.  Someone who might make a 'Donation' because they agree with what we are trying to do... and in exchange they might have a link, direct to their Website from ours... and visa versa.  They do not have the high profile of a Sponsor: [and are not putting their reputation at risk] but are not involved in a straight forward commercial arrangement like an Advertiser: [who would pay commission... or a click through rate.]  We would also encourage any of those in the last three categories to support us by displaying or printing our URL in as many places as possible... the more they publicise us the more we can publicise them.
I
Manufacturers of high performance vehicles might want to support this concept if for no other reason than to protect their own commercial interests.  Who is going to spend a lot of money on expensive engineering if a GPS Satellite will make it physically impossible to use it... anywhere in the country?
I
But again... we need to develop a fairly high profile before this is a realistic possibility.
I
I
The Bottom Line is...
I
everything we have outlined are just our ideas and suggestions... they are the ways in which we would like you to help us... but from the other side, we need to know what you would like us to do to help you? this is meant to be an On-going... Interactive Project... with no pre-determined outcome.  Only time will tell what we can achieve!
I
Ultimately... how you choose to participate or contribute is limited only by your own... Resources: Energy: Talent: and Imagination!
